Traveler Interest in Checkout Donations and Sustainable Fuel

Better Behavior Foundation · 2026

72.7%
preferred having a donation option at checkout
65.9%
preferred a platform that allowed SAF

Preliminary result. This simulated booking study examined traveler interest in two voluntary climate features: a forest-conservation contribution at checkout and a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) option. The study keeps the participating airline confidential.

What we tested

The study recorded 150 completed responses to the platform-preference questions and 138 SAF-choice responses. Participants chose between platforms featuring each option and baseline platforms in a simulated booking context.

What we found

  • 109 of 150 participants (72.7%) chose the platform that offered a voluntary forest-conservation donation at checkout.
  • 91 of 138 participants (65.9%) chose the platform that allowed SAF.

What it may mean

The results show interest in both options. A larger preregistered experiment should test whether a donation prompt changes a later SAF decision by retaining the randomized prompt assignment, the real-payment record, and the subsequent SAF choice in one analyzable dataset.

Evidence limits

The supplied export supports these platform-preference findings. A causal donation-to-SAF study requires retained prompt assignment, real-payment data, and the subsequent SAF choice in one analyzable dataset. A live booking study can then measure ticket sales, operational SAF purchasing, and long-run traveler behavior.
